The Brazilian Society of Ichthyology is a non-profit organization established in February 1982, during the IX Brazilian Congress of Zoology in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Its creation came from the fact that one-fifth of the papers presented at the VIII and IX Zoology Congress were fish related. Then it was constituted the Commission Provisional Pro-Foundation of the Brazilian Society of Ichthyology, with the support of 218 ichthyologists. The official foundation took place on February 2nd 1983, during the X Brazilian Congress of Zoology in Belo Horizonte, MG.
SBI is also part of the forum of Scientific Societies of the Brazilian Society of Zoology.
